1.1 Overview of the foundation’s purpose
The Ukrainian International Ballet Foundation (UIB) stands as a beacon of cultural resilience and artistic continuity. In a world where the upheaval of conflict has displaced countless artists, UIB harnesses the profound and poignant language of ballet to preserve and revitalize the rich tapestry of Ukrainian culture.
Founded amid the challenges of displacement and the scars of upheaval, UIB aims to unite Ukrainian ballet artists scattered across the globe, providing them a platform to express their indomitable spirit and artistic prowess. Through its activities, the Foundation seeks to nurture the creativity of these artists, offering them the resources and support needed to continue their artistic journeys in safety and dignity.
As UIB fosters this community of talent and resilience, it also promotes international cultural exchange and the enrichment of cultures through cooperation. By doing so, it serves as a vital conduit for cultural preservation and interaction, ensuring that the heritage and identity of Ukrainian ballet continue to thrive on the international stage, echoing the enduring strength and versatility of its people.
1.2 Historical context and significance of Ukrainian ballet
Ukrainian ballet, with its origins deeply rooted in the nation’s vibrant folklore and classical traditions, serves as a potent symbol of Ukrainian cultural identity and resilience. The UIB champions this rich heritage, casting light on its unique contributions to the world of dance. Ukrainian ballet emerged from a synthesis of local folk dances and the grandeur of classical ballet, enriched over time by influences from neighboring cultures and illustrious ballet schools. Yet, it has always retained its distinctive character.
The tradition of Ukrainian ballet is a testament to the creative spirit of a nation that has often found itself at the crossroads of cultural currents yet has consistently contributed a unique voice to the global arts tapestry. Through the ages, this art form has not only been a source of national pride but has also served as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy, showcasing the depth and richness of Ukrainian culture on the world stage.
Today, UIB embodies this legacy by promoting Ukrainian ballet as an art and a means of cultural dialogue. As the foundation nurtures and showcases the talents of displaced Ukrainian artists, it also becomes an emissary of peace and cultural exchange. In fostering these cultural ambassadors, UIB contributes to a broader understanding and appreciation of Ukrainian heritage globally. This role is particularly poignant in times of conflict, where the art of ballet becomes a powerful statement of cultural continuity and resilience.
Through its commitment to excellence and preservation, UIB sustains the historical significance of Ukrainian ballet and ensures its evolution. By supporting the creation of new works that reflect contemporary themes and stories, UIB helps to keep the tradition alive and relevant, enabling Ukrainian ballet to continue its journey as a vibrant and dynamic form of cultural expression that resonates worldwide.
2.1 Protecting Ukrainian cultural identity and fostering international dialogue
The UIB is dedicated to the mission of ensuring that the dynamic spirals and dramatic leaps of Ukrainian ballet continue to enchant and inspire audiences around the world. By safeguarding this invaluable cultural asset, UIB not only preserves a vital part of Ukraine’s cultural legacy but also fosters a deeper international appreciation and understanding of its historical and contemporary significance.
UIB’s commitment extends beyond performances, embedding Ukrainian ballet within global cultural dialogues, thereby promoting international empathy and cultural exchange. Through strategic collaborations and educational initiatives, the foundation aims to integrate Ukrainian ballet into diverse cultural landscapes, making it accessible to new audiences and enabling it to serve as a bridge that connects disparate cultures. These initiatives enrich cultural interactions and promote cooperation, enhancing the cultural fabric of communities worldwide.
Through these efforts, UIB champions the art of Ukrainian ballet and leverages it, as already stated, as a tool for cultural diplomacy, emphasizing the power of art to unite and heal in times of division and conflict.
2.2 Supporting Ukrainian ballet professionals and art forms
The Foundation commits itself as a haven for Ukrainian ballet professionals’ heartfelt and skillful expression. By providing robust support and resources, UIB aims to cultivate the conditions necessary for Ukrainian ballet’s preservation and inventive evolution. This involves safeguarding the venerable traditions of this artistic form and fostering an environment where innovation can flourish.
The Foundation facilitates career development opportunities for dancers, choreographers, and other ballet professionals through workshops, masterclasses, and international partnerships. It enables them to hone their craft and contribute to the art form’s evolution.
Additionally, UIB actively works to secure platforms where these artists can showcase their talent on the global stage, thus ensuring ongoing engagement with and relevance of Ukrainian ballet in the international arts community. This dual focus on legacy and innovation helps maintain the vitality and relevance of Ukrainian ballet, making it a living, breathing cultural expression that continues to resonate and inspire across borders.
3.1 Short-term and long-term goals
The UIB sets distinct strategic objectives to ensure immediate impact and sustained growth. In the short term, UIB prioritizes the acquisition of performance venues and scheduling ballet engagements worldwide. This immediate goal supports Ukrainian ballet’s visibility on the international stage and provides crucial employment opportunities for Ukrainian ballet artists in exile.
Looking towards the future, UIB aspires to broaden its cultural footprint by establishing a global Ukrainian ballet festival. This ambitious long-term goal aims to celebrate Ukrainian ballet’s heritage and contemporary interpretations, creating an annual event that attracts audiences and performers from around the globe. Such a festival would serve as a showcase for Ukrainian talent and creativity and a significant cultural exchange, enhancing global understanding and appreciation of Ukraine’s artistic contributions.
Through these focused short-term and visionary long-term objectives, UIB is committed to promoting Ukrainian ballet as a vibrant and enduring art form.
3.2 Sustainability and ethical considerations
The UIB embraces a comprehensive approach to sustainability, recognizing its crucial role in fostering a responsible cultural enterprise. UIB is committed to integrating environmentally sustainable practices within all aspects of its productions and touring schedules. This commitment involves adopting eco-friendly materials in set and costume design, utilizing energy-efficient lighting and sound technologies, and reducing travel-related carbon footprints by selecting transportation methods conscientiously.
Beyond environmental stewardship, the foundation upholds a strict code of ethical integrity across its operations. This includes fair labor practices, equitable collaboration with artists and partners, and transparency in governance. UIB’s dedication to these principles enhances its operational efficacy and reinforces its reputation as a morally guided institution, promoting ethical standards in the broader world of ballet and the arts.
By embedding these values into its core activities, UIB ensures that its contributions to the arts honor both the planet and the diverse communities it serves.
4.1 Creation and support of Ukrainian dance and ballet ensembles
The UIB proudly announces the formation of the Phoenix Ensemble, a touring ballet company that symbolizes the indomitable spirit of Ukraine. This initiative is pivotal in UIB’s efforts to cultivate and showcase Ukrainian ballet talent while providing a dynamic platform for cultural storytelling and artistic innovation.
The Phoenix Ensemble will feature a repertoire that includes classical Ukrainian pieces and contemporary works, reflecting Ukrainian ballet’s historical depth and evolving nature. By touring globally, the ensemble will keep Ukrainian ballet alive in the hearts of the international community and serve as a powerful ambassador of Ukraine’s rich artistic heritage.
UIB’s support for the Phoenix Ensemble extends to providing artistic direction, production resources, and marketing support, ensuring that each tour captures the essence of Ukrainian resilience and creativity and fosters a deeper global appreciation of Ukraine’s artistic contributions. Through the Phoenix Ensemble, UIB aims to inspire audiences worldwide, bridging cultures through the universal language of dance.
4.2 Artistic Programs: production and presentation
The UIB is set to enrich the global dance scene with its ambitious artistic programs scheduled for 2024 through the first half of 2025. UIB will launch a groundbreaking initiative featuring an innovative ballet evening titled ‘Independent24.’
This unique program will consist of two independent 30-minute ballets crafted through a collaborative effort between Ukrainian and Dutch choreographers. This collaboration underscores UIB’s commitment to international artistic partnerships and cultural exchange. The event will take place at the Korzo Theatre, which has generously offered its facilities for this vibrant cultural exchange.
‘Independent24’ is designed not only as a celebration of ballet but also as an emblem of inclusivity and resilience. Highlighting this theme, a Ukrainian war veteran will join the performers on stage, symbolizing the boundless spirit of art and demonstrating that physical limitations do not confine creativity or the human spirit. Following the performance, UIB will facilitate a panel discussion, engaging the audience in a dialogue about the performance’s thematic depth and its broader societal impacts.
Building on this momentum, UIB will also develop and globally tour a significant ballet production, ‘The Forest Song.’ This piece will weave elements of Ukrainian folklore into a rich tapestry of neoclassical ballet, accompanied by a live symphonic orchestra. This production aims to celebrate and perpetuate Ukrainian cultural narratives, presenting them through the expressive and universal medium of ballet to an international audience, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for Ukraine’s cultural heritage and its contemporary artistic expressions.
4.3 Collaboration with Ukrainian and International ballet communities
The UIB is dedicated to fostering global artistic connections through its innovative ‘Ballet Bridges’ initiative. This platform is designed to facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaborative creation among Ukrainian and international ballet communities. ‘Ballet Bridges’ will serve as a dynamic space for exchanging ideas, techniques, and cultural narratives, enabling artists from diverse backgrounds to explore and integrate different ballet traditions and innovations.
By organizing workshops, joint performances, and creative residencies, UIB aims to cultivate a fertile ground for artistic growth and mutual inspiration. These interactions are intended to enrich the participating artists’ repertoires and create a more interconnected global ballet community that thrives on cultural diversity and shared artistic goals.
Through ‘Ballet Bridges,’ UIB envisions building lasting partnerships that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, enhancing the development of ballet as a truly global art form.
5.1 Methods and channels for fundraising
The UIB is taking a multifaceted approach to securing the financial resources necessary for its ambitious goals. Central to these efforts is the launch of the ‘Pirouette Pledge Campaign,’ a strategic mix that combines the elegance of traditional fundraising approaches with the broad reach of modern crowdfunding initiatives.
This dual approach allows UIB to engage diverse supporters, from local patrons and global ballet enthusiasts to the broader online community. Furthermore, UIB plans to leverage the influence of celebrities with Ukrainian heritage, engaging these high-profile figures in its mission to garner international attention and support. This strategy is particularly crucial in times when Ukrainian culture faces threats of erasure, making advocacy and financial backing from such celebrities a powerful tool for cultural preservation.
By using these varied fundraising channels, UIB aims to create a robust funding base that ensures the continuity and expansion of Ukrainian ballet and culture on the global stage.
5.2 Grant opportunities and sponsorships
The UIB is actively expanding its financial support framework by strategically targeting grant opportunities and sponsorships that resonate with its mission of cultural preservation and artistic innovation. UIB is meticulous in identifying grants that specifically support the arts and cultural heritage, having already submitted applications for funding to support the innovative ‘Independent24’ project.
Building on this momentum, the UIB plans to approach both local and international grant-making organizations to secure the necessary funds for the ambitious ‘The Forest Song’ ballet. This proactive approach ensures that each production achieves artistic excellence and becomes a vehicle for showcasing Ukrainian culture globally. Additionally, the UIB is dedicated to cultivating relationships with patrons and corporate sponsors who are committed to supporting the arts and are aligned with the foundation’s goals of cultural advocacy and artistic outreach. These collaborative partnerships are vital in providing the stable financial backing needed to sustain and expand the UIB’s diverse array of projects.
5.3 Public and Private Partnerships
The UIB actively cultivates strategic partnerships with organizations that share its vision for peace, cultural preservation, and artistic expression. One of the key collaborations is with the ‘Dance for Peace’ alliance, which brings together various stakeholders in the arts to promote unity and healing through dance. This alliance allows the UIB to extend its reach and impact by sharing resources and enhancing the visibility of its initiatives.
Additionally, the UIB has established a meaningful partnership with the Salvation Army, a renowned Dutch charity organization. Through this collaboration, the UIB dancers contribute their expertise to a coaching team at the Talent Festival, an event designed to uplift Ukrainian refugees through cultural engagement and talent development, scheduled for June 2024.
The UIB’s commitment to supporting Ukraine extends beyond artistic contributions. Its dancers actively participate in charity and fundraising events that provide humanitarian aid across various fields. These activities highlight the foundation’s dedication to its homeland and strengthen its community ties and support network.
Furthermore, the UIB has forged a robust partnership with the Ukrainian partner Fedir Shpyg Foundation, which played a critical role during the grant application process for the ‘Independent24’ project. Another vital supporter is the VATAHA Foundation, with whom the UIB plans to deepen collaboration to further restore and promote Ukrainian culture. These partnerships are pivotal, enhancing UIB’s capacity to achieve its mission and amplify its cultural impact locally and internationally.
The UIB has been structured to address the unique challenges faced by Ukrainian ballet professionals. While this organizational framework may diverge from typical structures seen in mainstream Dutch cultural organizations, it is specifically tailored to the exigencies of the Ukrainian ballet community, particularly in times of displacement and urgency.
The architecture of UIB’s governance is fundamentally driven by pragmatic needs: actions are taken as needed, swiftly and effectively, ensuring immediate response and support for the ballet community. Despite the adaptiveness and urgency of its operations, the foundation’s organizational structure adheres to the universally recognized principles of good governance. This approach guarantees transparency, accountability, and effectiveness, ensuring that UIB’s activities remain focused on its mission while upholding the highest standards of organizational integrity.
